I Drew This Thing #5 from @drawmark for @illo_island
I had to reblog this hilarious piece by Mark, as it made me think about why I do gig posters. Somewhere late in my second year of college, my motto and goal in life was to “make cool shit”, and that’s pretty much stayed with me. I think some version of that was in my head when I started doing posters in 2000 (holy shit, look at this thing! There’s a lot I’d do differently now). Back then, I didn’t get paid. I was doing it for fun, props, to help friends via promotion, and being part of the culture. Now, I still do it for those reasons, but I get a little something for the effort. I know my friends in music aren’t made of money, so I don’t ask for much. This was, of course, while I still had a job.
With my newly-started unemployment adventure, I find I’m re-evaluating where I am in the realm of freelance illustration and design. All I know is that this hopefully brief moment of joblessness will be used wisely. I’ve got some time, I’m gonna spend it creating…like I should’ve been all along.
